Best known for his role as Father Ted in the Channel Four sitcom of the same name, Dermot Morgan also wrote and performed comedy songs, firstly on the television show The Live Mike, his 1979 TV début, which made him a household name in Ireland, particularly for his role as Father Trendy, a parody of the television-friendly priest figure. Throughout the eighties, Morgan released a number of comedy singles, many of them relating to politics and sport, two of his personal interests, and frequently involving impressions of Irish celebrities, a skill for which Morgan would become known in the early nineties through his satirical radio show Scrap Saturday. In 1985, his single Thank You Very Much, Mr Eastwood, in which he parodied Northern Irish boxer Barry McGuigan, was a Christmas number one in Ireland.

In 1987, Morgan’s first and only album, Special Moments, was released, comprising three previously released singles and nine new songs, and a guest appearance from the City of Dublin Welsh Male Voice Choir. In 1990, he released a single to celebrate Ireland’s qualification for the World Cup as well as collaborating with the Dublin City Ramblers on a novelty single for the same event. His final release was A Country And Western Taoiseach in 1992.

Morgan was born in 1952, lived in Dublin all his life prior to moving to London in 1994 to film Father Ted, and died in 1998 following a heart attack. Read more on Last.fm. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
