Since first hooking up in Australia in early 2005 Canadian ex-pat dj/producer SEMPER-FI and Philadelphia’s MC HALFCAST have been quietly working on their hybrid sound combining elements of hip-hop, dubby beats and drum’n’bass along with conscious, rapid-fire rhymes. SEMPER-FI has been a regular DJ in the Sydney drum’n’bass scene for many years, always known for mixing up elements of hip-hop, dancehall and heady beats with his jungle sounds. Over the past few years he’s opened for a wide spectrum of acts ranging from reggae legends SLY & ROBBIE, UK hip-hop heavyweight DJ MK (Roots Manuva’s DJ), NZ’s SALMONELLA DUB and has also become the resident DJ for Dub Conspiracy gigs. HALFCAST is a member of lo-fi glitch act AUNT JESSICA, signed to Ropeadope Records and has done time touring with Philly hip-hop act SKOOLZ OF THOUGHT. Before recently re-locating to New York, Halfcast spent over a year in Sydney collaborating with Semper-Fi along with making occasional appearances at spoken word nights around the city. Halfcast makes his return to Sydney for the launch of the EP this October. Together the two have hooked up with the Dub Conspiracy to release their debut EP which stands as a briefing of what’s in the pipeline for the cross continental collaborators. An earlier mix of ‘Freedim Meaning’ was originally released on the Dub Conspiracy compilation late in 2005 and has enjoyed numerous plays on Triple J, Koori Radio and high rotation on Sydney’s FBI.
