BOI WHAT is a SpongeBob focused music project by Los Angeles-based musician and producer Eli Strobeck, who also performs as Mathue.
Strobeck started BOI WHAT in 2023 as a playful exploration of AI voice manipulation, using voice filters to emulate the voices of characters from the Nickelodeon series, such as SpongeBob, Plankton, and Squidward. With each character’s voice filtered through AI, he quickly developed songs with broad genre influences, creating a catalog of music that expanded from hip-hop, country, metal and pop punk.
BOI WHAT started releasing music via Hallwood Recordings in the summer of 2023, with the hip-hop Squidward track “Make a Wish (Squiddy)”, followed by more pop punk sounding SpongeBob tracks, titled “Dear Magic Conch Shell” (inspired by Morgan Wallen's song “Cowgirls”), “Wish I Woulda Known” and “Just a Pineapple”, which gained over 4.5 million streams.
Another breakthrough came with the metal song, “PLAN Z,” released on September 8, 2023. The song attracted over 710,000 streams in its first week, brought attention to his unique approach of combining metal with Plankton’s voice and the recurring series theme of Plankton’s quest to obtain the Krabby Patty secret formula. BOI WHAT’s rapid success reflected a strong online response, gathering over 18 million streams within just five months. The song secured a spot on Billboard’s Hot Hard Rock Songs chart at #14. This attention catapulted Strobeck into the mainstream and earned him two record contracts as both an artist and songwriter.
Following “Plan Z,” BOI WHAT’s catalog expanded with more heavy SpongeBob-inspired singles like “Neon Tide”, “Funeral of an Antihero”, “The Both of Us” and “Rock Bottom”.
BOI WHAT’s innovative use of AI helped Strobeck reach listeners worldwide, bringing in a steady monthly listener count of 540,000 on streaming platforms. His viral success on social media further extended his reach, paving the way for collaborations with other artists. On January 19, 2024, BOI WHAT teamed up with Jeris Johnson to release the single “Battling My Demons.” Strobeck’s production skills also contributed to other tracks, such as “Siren Song” by Jeris Johnson and “Dramatic” by The New Violence, both released on August 23, 2024.
