Gasoline Alley Lyrics

I think I'm goin' mad and it's makin' me sad,
It's a yearnin' for my old back door.
I realize maybe I was born to lead, better swallow my silly country pride.

Goin' home, running' home, down the Gasoline Alley where I started from.
Goin' home, and I'm running' home, down the Gasoline Alley where I was born.

When the weather's better and rails unfreeze,
And the wind won't whistle 'round my knees,
I'll put on my weather suit and catch you in the rain.
I'll be home before the milk's upon the door.

Goin' home, running' home, down the Gasoline Alley where I started from.
Goin' home, and I'm running' home, down the Gasoline Alley where I was born.

But if anything should happen and my plans go wrong,
Should I stray to the house on the hill,
Let it be known that my intentions were good,
I'd be singing in my alley if I could

And if I'm goin' away and it's my turn to go,'
Should the blood run cold in my veins,
Just one favor I'd be askin' of you,
Don't bury me here it's too cold.

Take me back carry me back down to Gasoline Alley where I started from.
Take me back, won't cha carry me home down to
Gasoline Alley where I started from.

Take me back carry me back down to gasoline Alley where I started from.
Take me back, won't cha carry me home down to

Elkie Brooks (born Elaine Bookbinder on 25 February 1945, Broughton, Salford, England) is an English singer, formerly a vocalist with Vinegar Joe, and later a solo artist.

A professional singer since she was fifteen, Brooks' début, a cover of Etta James's "Something's Got A Hold On Me", was released on Decca in 1964. Later she became the vocalist with a British 12-piece Stax-influenced, jazz-rock fusion band called Dada that released one, eponymous, album in 1970.

Brooks, along with guitarist Pete Gage, singer Robert Palmer and bassist Steve York formed Vinegar Joe in 1971, adding keyboard player Dave Thompson. The band was without a drummer; Conrad Isidore and Rob Tait drummed on the first album, released in 1972.

In 1974, after three albums Vinegar Joe split and Brooks went solo. After a time in the US as backing singer with the American southern boogie band Wet Willie, she returned to England. Her first solo album on A&M records was Rich Man's Woman (1975). Read more on Last.fm. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
