THE ARTIST
Brainwashed Proper Citizens is the brainchild of singer/songwriter/audio engineer Adam Halstrom.
After fronting northern Manitoba rock outfit No Point Intended and self-producing their debut album "Believe" (2001), Halstrom side-stepped into the role of audio engineer and session musician; producing a handful of EP's and debut LP's including rock act BUZZFIST (2003's "Loss of the Innocent"), singer/songwriter Jamie Rumley (2008's "Renovations" and 2011's "What Are You Waiting For"), and Christian-rockers Divine Signature (2011’s “Thank You Jesus”).
During this time, Halstrom wrote and recorded a number of solo-project demos under the pseudonym "dimmer". Most of these were never released but served as a way to experiment with the writing and recording process, taking influences from various genres and artists that came into the studio.
Now armed with a collection of demos, noise-makers, and a recording studio in the basement of his south-Winnipeg home, Halstrom is recording and releasing a collection of all-new solo and collaborative material as Brainwashed Proper Citizens.
THE MUSIC
Simply put: a mesh of 90's-influnced hard rock and pop rock.
Consider a blend of moody riff-rock (Helmet, Hum, Deftones), psychedelic alternative-rock (My Bloody Valentine, Smashing Pumpkins), and melodic pop-rock (Green Day, Blink-182). The result is Brainwashed Proper Citizens; guitar-driven pop-rock mixed with Halstrom's unique vocal and writing style.
“Street Lights in Stereo” is the forthcoming debut EP from Brainwashed Proper Citizens.
“This release is intended to present a quick snapshot of where I am with my songwriting and audio production. It represents the styles and sounds that I love to listen to and translate to my own music. The songs were all self-performed, engineered, produced, mixed, and mastered in the basement of my south-River Heights home in Winnipeg. The name ‘Street Lights in Stereo’ is a loose reference to the link between music, sounds, and where you come from.”
HISTORY
Brainwashed Proper Citizens started as a collaboration project between Halstrom and musician Jo Johnson (BUZZFIST) while the two were playing in separate bands in the small northern-Manitoba community of The Pas. Unfortunately the timing of the project led to an early halt; shortly after recording two songs, Halstrom moved south to Winnipeg and Johnson west to Alberta. Ten years later, the name has been revived. Now solely led by Halstrom, it is inspired by the same musical style and approach to in-studio writing and arranging, collaboration and experimentation.
