Kirk is from Detroit, Michigan. He grew up hearing traditional spirituals and early rock & roll, and was introduced to jazz greats like Dave Brubeck, Henry Mancini, and Quincy Jones throughout his early musical training. He earned a bachelors degree in classical music theory and piano from the University of Michigan in 1977. He was soon after touring the US with The Murphy Family, an Australian band that launched the career of country artist, Jamie O'Neal. He lived in Santa Fe through the '80s where he worked with such great musicians as jazz bassist, Joe Mondragon, and producer/singer/songwriter, Jack Clift.

He released his first CD, "in here", in 1993. Since then he has released two more solo CDs along with numerous collaborations. "Drift", released in 2004 garnered CNET's Editors' Choice Award. The single, "Drift #7", has been on Broadjam's Top 10 New Age-Meditational chart time and time again. "Tradewinds", which came out in 2005, was downloaded over 100,000 times in the first year after its release. Read more on Last.fm.
