Born and bred in New Brunswick, New Jersey’s beer-soaked basement scene, Communipaw is essentially a convergence of three veteran indie rock projects that cut their teeth in the local DIY circuit. Since the band’s inception – a 2007 impromptu performance featuring lead singer/songwriter Brian Bond and drummer Keith Carne – they have formed a four way kinetic connection with bassist Dave Esterman and lead guitarist Brian Kelly, and a project that represents their creative ideal: music that’s equally as enjoyable as it is insightful. By mixing their love of soaring, anthemic indie rock with a classic songwriting sensibility and a bit of alt-country, Communipaw has crafted a dynamic brand of indie-pop, and thus built a reputation for originality in their hometown scene.
Communipaw’s debut – an acoustic guitar-based seven-song EP called Moving Till The Morning – flirted more with alt-country interests. Released in April 2008, Moving… allowed the band to make rounds of the Central Jersey scene for a bit, before they jumped back into the studio. The initial intention to make another EP soon morphed into an adventure that has since inspired 11 new songs, reinvention, experimentation, and revision along every step of the way.
Communipaw gives the foursome an opportunity to exercise their romantic ideas about recording, song writing, and even instrumentation. It’s the project they’ve been dreaming about ever since they heard Sunny Day Real Estate, and understood why Wilco is so awesome. It’s rare that a band can tastefully mix sensitive songwriting, guitar-god leads, tape effects, and an upright double bass; Communipaw grants them that chance.
