Vinterskogen's concept has been around since mid. 2009, where the Necrosis frontman wanted to go back to his first love, Atmospheric Black Metal, in particular the Slovakian band Alatyr, and other acts, such as Burzum and Mayhem.

It wasn't until around a year later that recording started for the self titled demo, which was subsequently finished around 4 months later.

The main theme's for Vinterskogen, are as the name suggests, Winter, and Nature, but also in songs like 'Inchmurrin', go into things such as Scottish/Celtic history, and Demonology, in the song 'Buer stalks In the Mist'. There is also constant references to loneliness and depression, but Vinterskogen is not considered DSBM.
