Suffering from congenital childhood glaucoma, he lost his eyesight in an accident at the age of 8 and entered a school for the blind. He debuted as a singer in January 1970, when he was in his second year of high school. At first, he gained popularity because of his disability, but in 1971, he began to receive attention as a singer when he received several new singer awards. He is also talented as a guitarist, so he took on the 12-string guitar for Yang Hee-eun's debut album Morning Dew. He won the MBC Top 10 Singer Award for consecutive years in 1972 and 1973.

As Korea's first blind singer, he dominated an era when there was not much TV yet. With his brilliant brain, extensive knowledge, and eloquence on the radio, Dong-A Broadcasting Corporation's radio program "Pleasant Parlor" was one of the popular programs at the time, similar to today's entertainment programs. At that time, the moderator Jeon Young-woo or Choi Doo-heon appeared on the panel Hangeul scholar Dr. Han Gong-nam and gave laughter and surprise to the audience with his fluent jokes.
