Colorado's spacey bliss rockers, Bright Channel are the second incarnation of Jeff Suthers', and Shannon Stein’s first band Volplane. Volplane disbanded in 1999, and core members Suthers and Stein formed another three piece a few years later (2002) named Bright Channel. In 2003, Bright Channel released a four track demo on Jeff Suthers D.I.Y. label Flight Approved Records. Rough tracks of Night Eyes, Light Workers, Endless, and Icefield, still had Suthers and Stein's trademark crunchy, dreamy, shimmering noir sound, heard previously on Volplane.
One year later Bright Channel officially released their debut self titled album in 2004, recorded by acclaimed engineer Steve Albini. Their first full length was followed by plenty of live shows in and around Colorado. However; Bright Channel never really explored a national tour, and was rarely seen outside of their home base in Colorado. In 2006, Bright Channel self-recorded and released their second full length album, aptly titled Self-Propelled. Tracks like Disillusionist, and Silver Age were consistent with Suthers' previous releases. Local fans had the chance to see many of Self-Propelled's songs live for the next few years, and the band played a few select shows outside of Colorado, including shows at SXSW in 2006 and a few tour dates with Brian Jonestown Massacre. As fans waited for a new Bright Channel record, they would have to settle on the “then unreleased” Volplane retrospective released in July of 2006.
In January of 2007, there was news that Bright Channel would be recording their third album. However seven months later, after a couple of live performances, Bright Channel posted unfortunate news on August 27th 2007. It read, "We are sorry to announce that Bright Channel will be going on indefinite hiatus." Whatever the reason for Bright Channel's disbandment (perhaps death), it may be partially contributed to Jeff Suthers' third reincarnated band, named Moonspeed, which also shares a similar sound of the last two projects except that the sound has expanded to eleven members instead of just three.
