Gabby Johnson was formed in DeSoto County, Mississippi--more specifically Horn Lake, Mississippi. The four guys all went to the same high school and through several coincidences of fate, all ended up playing music together one hot summer day in 1997. That first day was June 22, 1997. A phone call interrupted "practice". . .a friend heard about a new band and wanted them to play at his house Friday night. Well, if they weren't a band 5 minutes ago, they are now. Gabby Johnson.
The history of Gabby Johnson goes way back to a church band that Joey & Donnie were in (with local singer/songwriter, Al Johns) back in the early '90's. They had a few gigs, but when they played a song that rocked at a church service one day, that was pretty much the end of that band.
Around that same time, Juno and Joey were in high school together, but didn't meet until Joey's ex-girlfriend (Juno's girlfriend at the time) took Juno to church with her and Joey went to the same church. We both played guitar, and were both very new at it. Joey had played with Donnie in that band, and Juno had been playing for a few years, but had never been in a band. Over the next few years, Juno & Joey got together here and there and played a few times. . .no big deal. They were never a band, and never played in front of any people.
Then Juno graduated high school and didn't talk to Joey much until he started datin' his sister. It was on one fateful night at CottonBowl Lanes in Southaven, Mississippi (December 3, 1995) that Juno asked Joey if he wanted to start a band. Joey seemed enthusiastic about it, but at that time, they both played guitar, and didn't really have a drummer yet (not to mention a singer). Juno had been playin' with a drummer named Jeff West throughout high school. This guy was a drummer!!! Now the band-to-be had someone that knew something about music. Juno asked Jeff to be the drummer and he, of course, said "yes". So, now there's two guitarists, a drummer, no bassist, and no singer.
Luckily, the practice room (Juno's parents' living room) had plenty of guitars and Juno's uncle had left a bass guitar over there. So one day Joey picked up the bass and started playing a few songs on it. This band's first (and only) gig was December 31, 1995. They knew 9 songs, and Juno sang all of them, which was not a good thing. Joey played bass on half of them and guitar on half of them. Very versatile young man. So, they were a band; they just had a crappy singer. Joey and Juno had talked about naming their band (if they ever got in one) Gabby Johnson. Well, Jeff and Juno had talked about naming their band (if they ever got in one) Fear Not. Anyways, since that was their only gig, the name conflict never came to be a conflict. Jeff went on to school and got his bachelor's degree and became a music teacher. Joey & Juno kept trying to start a band.
When that "band" ended, Joey was determined to become a bass player. Juno & Joey tried to get with a few people in the neighborhood, but nothing really ever panned out. Joey got an offer from Trent Rock to play bass in his band (called Plaid). Joey happily accepted and used that band to become one with the bass guitar. The only thing that he wasn't happy about was the music they played. The played a more alternative side of rock and roll. Some new stuff, almost no classic rock, and some originals. He liked playing bass, but just didn't feel like that would be the band that he stayed in forever.
In the meantime, Donnie & Travis had been messing around with bands themselves. They never had any real gigs or made any money, but Travis had written some songs and Donnie had written some songs, and they played them for their friends, and all that. They were actually more of a country band. Donnie's Dad had been the drummer for several famous country stars, so Donnie was always surrounded by famous people, and a lot of country music. At one point, the one and only Ryan Kuykendall was a member of one of their "bands". No big successes or failures came from Donnie & Travis' get-togethers.
So while Travis & Donnie were in a semi-band, and Joey was in a band, Juno was just sitting around wanting to be in a band until finally one day he was over at a friend's house and this friend's little sister at the time was dating a guy named Rusty Lemons. Rusty had heard that Juno played guitar, and he needed a guitarist for one gig that he was gonna do a few months down the road. Well, Rusty is a singer. He was more into country and pop music, but it was music and it was a band, so Juno decided to go for it. The Rusty Lemons Project played some pop and very few rock songs, but mostly country. At one of the first practices, Juno noticed that the drummer had on a ROCK 103 t-shirt (that's a local Classic Rock radio station in Memphis). Juno approached him and asked him if he liked Rock & Roll and when Donnie mentioned The Eagles, Juno knew something good was in the works. Juno mentioned to Donnie that they should start their own band, a classic rock band. Donnie agreed that he'd rather be playing Rock & Roll.
So, Juno & Donnie stayed in The Rusty Lemons Project for quite a while. A couple months, maybe, but due to creative differences between Juno & Rusty, Juno decided to try his luck elsewhere. After his "I quit" speech, he looked over at Donnie and said, "So Donnie, c'mon, let's go. . ." Donnie nodded, and walked away with Juno like Virgil & Wyatt Earp after the OK Coral shootout. That same night, Donnie introduced Juno to a friend of his named Travis. He had mentioned Travis to me before, but said that he was really young. He was 16 at the time. Well, that night (the night The Rusty Lemons Project came to an end) during one of the breaks, Travis got with the guys in the band and sang Margarittaville. Joey just happened to be there that night too, so after a Jimmy Buffet jam session, they all decided to get together the next day (Sunday, June 22, 1997) to see if they could get something good going finally. That was the first day Juno & Joey had really met Travis, but Juno sorta knew Donnie and Donnie & Joey knew each other because they were in that church band and Donnie & Travis knew each other. Actually Joey & Travis had met some time earlier in driving school, but that's a different story.
On June 22, 1997, they all got together to sorta jam or whatever. . .Juno got a phone call. . .one of his brother's friends had heard that he was in a band. . .(The Rusty Lemons Project). . .Juno told him that he had a new band. . .very new. . .only about a half-hour old actually. . .Anyways, he told him that they didn't know very many songs, but that they would try to play for them anyway. So, there's the first gig. . .they were supposed to start at about 8:00, but got started about 10:30 because they lost things, they left things at home, things wouldn't work, etc. . .Well, it was during Sweet Home Chicago that Travis introduced themselves as "Gabby Johnson", and Juno & Joey looked at each other like, "That's sorta cool. . ." But they didn't know what to think. Evidently Donnie had told Travis that they were gonna be called Gabby Johnson, so that was cool. They had always talked about being in a band called "Gabby Johnson", but just at that moment realized that they actually were in that band.
So, their first gig was on Friday, June 27, 1997. They went to record their first CD on July 17, 1999. They released their first album (Walkin' Out) on October 29, 1999. They didn't know how the sales from that CD would go, but around mid-June of 2002, they completely sold out of Walkin' Out. They recorded their second album, 129, from July 22, 2001 to about the middle of August 2001. It was released on November 2, 2001. They were very excited about this one, but still knew they had a lot of work to do to capture their ideal "sound" on an album. 129 was not quite where they wanted to be, but it was closer than Walkin' Out.
They started recording their third CD (Been So Long) in November of 2003. They finished it sometime in December. They only recorded and worked for 6 days while their engineer, Chris Rowe worked many many hours to make the CD sound incredibly awesome. Kenny Lamb produced it, which led to quite a "fresh" sounding CD. At the end of it all, they were proud of the CD, but still knew they had yet to capture the emotion that they had been trying to convey in their live shows.
In March of 2007, they started recording their long-awaited 4th album, which they appropriately titled, Life. At this point, they had been together for 10 years, spent many hours in the van together, had way too many fights, almost broke up a few times, blah blah blah. . .As strange as it seems, they felt fresh, and alive, and that was all conveyed in the lyrics to the songs, so Travis mentioned naming the CD, Life. It was released on October 26, 2007 (almost 8 years to the day after the release of our first CD.
Since the release of the 4th CD, they've been very busy with gigs. They plan on coming out with a new CD sometime soon, but aren't in a hurry. Maybe it will be live, maybe it will be greatest hits type with a few new songs, maybe it will be all covers, they don't know. Their website, myspace, and facebook pages are the best way to stay up to date with what's going on.
