Runningonair (Joe Evans) has been writing music since the early ‘80s. The driving force for much of his music has been technology; at first created on reel to reel, progressing through to 4 track cassette, then midi studio and now produced on computer based DAW. The connection extends beyond production into the themes within the music. Found sounds, often technological in nature, are employed to enhance the soundscape. The results are often open to multiple interpretations.

The earliest work demonstrates a drive to experiment. Unexpected harmonies and sounds are produced on the most basic equipment. At the same time, the compositional learning curve is clearly seen with a rapid development of style.

In the late ‘80s Joe decided to pursue a career in classical composition. This led to Joe entering the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama from ’91 – ’95. Studying with John Maxwell-Geddes and James Macmillan, he used the time to learn composition as a craft and develop the techniques used by professionals. This was a period of rapid change and was a period where only acoustic music was produced.

Towards the end of ’94 technology came back into view. Midi studios were now common place and digital mastering was easily affordable. After four years of classical and Jazz composition, a change of pace and a renewed interest in electronic music resulted in a slew of Down beat and techno tracks and led in turn to the track “City Morning” being featured in the September ’95 issue of “Future Music”. This was followed in ’96 by the release of the ambient/soundtrack piece “Second Thoughts” on the “Dream Machine” label.

The late ‘90s and early ‘00s saw a number of song collaborations first with Clare Sully and then Anne Jenkins. By ’04 the first tracks were completed for what would become the debut album “Out of Process”, which was released on 18/09/2009. This was praised highly by reviewers. “The Musician” described it as a"...stunning series of instrumentals... ".

A chance encounter in the same year resulted in a collaboration with Craig Burston on the Gallery Installation “Systems out of Chance”. This was exhibited in the Parfitt Gallery in March 2010. The Music and Imagery were released on CD and DVD and the initial limited edition release quickly sold out.
In June 2010 the emblematic track “Click Continue” was re-released in expanded form. The EP includes 4 remixes, the original track and a video. Two of the remixes are by “Dan lo-fi” and “Chocolate Girl”.

A number of other possible projects are now either underway or under consideration. These may well include the release of re-mastered material from the ‘90s (a runningonair prequel), A systems based ambient work and a collection of tracks created from recycled ‘80s recordings.
