Formed at the University of Birmingham over 2014-15, the band, then known as 'Benny and the Benders', initially made their name playing classic rock covers at open mic nights before gaining traction in the local Midlands scene, playing various shows with similar bands. The band's core, consisting of Alex Hanrott (bass guitar), Ben Price (vocals, and eventually second guitar) and Cillian Breathnach (lead guitar), had a rotating drum stool for some time. Their first original song, a 12-bar blues rocker titled 'Fire Woman', was released as a single online around 2015. In Spring 2017, the band settled with James Jackson, who has drummed for the band since. The band's first show with Jackson as a permanent member was their first as Mandalorian, intending to take on a more serious band name. As the bandmembers graduated and dispersed from Birmingham, they are no longer exclusively based in the Midlands, with most of the band now either living in Bristol or London. Mandalorian released their debut EP in June 2018, titled 'Machetezilla!: And Other Tales of Terror', with the title track soon after featured on stoner rock playlists, with lyrics about a murderous giant lizard.
