Frank Milne was a piano roll editor for the Aeolian Company, which was a piano roll industry leader. In 1933, Milne "cut" a 2-roll arrangement of George Gershwin's An American in Paris. Cutting a piano roll refers to the punching of various sized "holes" in the piano roll, which in turn triggered the piano keys to play. This arrangement is included in the album Gershwin Plays Gershwin: The Piano Rolls. Though "An American in Paris" on this album is a Gershwin piece, a piano was not used to cut these piano rolls. The liner notes for this album give the history of player pianos and how they played piano rolls. Also explained is Gershwin's performance history, including his time making piano rolls for various companies of the time. This was prior to quality phonograph records, so player pianos were the way to hear the pop songs of the era and to use as accompaniment for singing or dancing.
