The band was formed in Szeged (South-East Hungary) in 1988, their name was Variola Vera that time, which came from a B-class horror movie. After some changes in the line-up Variola became a popular Hungarian underground band. That time alternative/rock acts in Hungary had lots of opportunity to play club shows even in small towns and these were usually packed with the hungry audience.
They often gigged with the most popular acts from the scene (Tankcsapda, Kispál Ès a Borz, PUF), but the best friendship was established with Sexepil, the first Hungarian act played on MTV. Around 1990-1995 Variola played hundreds of concerts and recorded some demos, but they never released any albums, their lack of money barred they efforts to make a professional material. In the mid '90-s most of the Hungarian underground clubs closed their doors and without an album it was impossible to play in the big festivals, so Variola disbanded temporarily. (except one show in '97)
During this period everyone took care about his private life, work or played in several other music groups like Heaven Street Seven, Amber Smith, FreshFabrik, Bery Ari Ès a Pillangók, Nevergreen, Boldog Idő, Ferenczi György Ès a Herfli Davidson, CpG, ’88, Garde, Időrablók, Hungarian Dracula, etc.
In 2005 the member decided not to lose the previous work and they started rehearsing again, still playing the good old dark/gothic/rock, with an upgraded sound. The first shows took place during the summer on the stages of two important Hungarian festivals, Nightbreed (dark-gothic-metal meeting) and Szeged Youth Festival (SZIN - with The Cure, Alphaville, etc.). The band will play some club gigs during this autumn at JATE Klub (Szeged), Marco Polo Club (Budapest), Almassy teri Culture Center (Budapest) with De Facto, Green Division, Floodland and the reuniting Sexepil. The most important goal for this year is to record Variola's debut album featuring old and some new songs. The album will be released by the band itself around the end of 2005.
