A disciple of renowned Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and Pandit V.G Jog, Sisirkana Dhar Chowdhury is ranked among India's premier exponents of Hindustani classical music. Sisirkana has performed frequently on All India Radio and Television and is a 1997 recipient of Indias prestigious Sangeet Natak Academy award for her contribution to the field of Hindustani classical violin. But her renown does not come remotely close to matching her amazing gifts and accomplishments. Even though she is one of the greatest Hindustani violinists, there is not a single recording of her music commercially available anywhere. She plays both violin and viola and has added a fifth melody string, and several resonating strings, to each. In concert she often plays the alap on the viola, then switches to the violin to play the gat and variations on a different but closely related raga. Every musical tradition that has adopted the violin has developed a different standard for how the instrument is supposed to sound: the even steady tone of European classical music, the wide slippery vibrato of French gypsy violin, the wheezy sawing sound of Cajun and old-time fiddle. Sisirkana Dhar Chowdhury has found a place for every one of these tone colours in her aesthetic universe and plays them off against each other to create a profound musical experience.

Along with her interest in playing music, Chowdhury made contributions to the field of Musicology. She was consulted in the writings of other ethnomusical scholars, and wrote her own book titled "The Origin and Evolution of Violin As a Musical Instrument: And Its Contribution to the Progressive Flow of Indian Classical Music" in 2010. After retiring from her post as a professor at Rabindra Bharati University in 1997 she moved to the US to join the faculty of the Ali Akbar College of Music and transcribe the music of Allauddin Khan from the collection there. Her transcriptions were of a unique quality because she trained under Khan's son, giving her special insight
