Kudgel were a criminally underrated/unknown and short-lived band from Boston, MA. Their music played a big role (along with the Swirlies) in basically developing what came to be known as “chimp rock”. The sound for Chimp Rock is described as such in their bio, “spastic and overblown-guitar driven noise-pop, infused with a bubblegum sensibility that belied the complexity of their song structure”. Owing more to the Amrep noise-rock sound than their Boston-area counterparts with their unmistakenly recognizable strained vocals and numbingly loud guitars, Kudgel broke up in 1994 leaving a legacy as being *the* elder statesman of Boston noise-rock.
