The Fruit Eating Bears in 1976 were Kenny Mundye (Drums) Rick Dean (vocals) Neville (vocals/guitar), and the late Garry Croudace(bass/vocals) who came from the Croydon area and were originally known as "The Tricycle Turds" before bringing back the name of "The Merseys" (Sorrow) backing band "The Fruit Eating Bears", as Kenny was one of their original two drummers . By 1977 Kenny and Rick had both left. Neville took over vocals, and the soon to be ledgendary "Chris Crash" took over on drums. In 1978 both the band's singles produced by the late Vic Maile were released, 'Chevy Heavy' / 'Fifties Cowboy' (Lightning, 1978) and 'Door In My Face' / 'Going Thru The Motions' (DJM, 1978) . Their publishers bizarrely entered 'Door In My Face' in 'A Song For Europe', the 1978 UK heat for 'The Eurovision Song Contest' and got in the last ten, the original X factor! The 'Bears' performed the track on national prime time TV at The Albert Hall in London , introduced by Terry Wogan. Fortunately they finished joint 10th (out of 10). Terry Wogan, on this first encroachment of punk into Eurovision, described the band as "Gentle creatures despite their fierce appearance" The title used for the 1999 CD Anthology, containing all of the Vic Maile produced unrealeased album and a live set. The Bears also backed on record Hazel O'Connor, Lew Lewis, and worked with The Pirates. Today Chris is keeping a low profile, Neville is in "The Midnight Howlers" (www.midnighthowlers.co.uk) and still plays CHEVY HEAVY and 1-30,2-30,3-35 with them, check iTunes if you want to hear them. Garry sadly passed away in America in February of 2007. See also www.fruiteatingbears.co.uk Read more on Last.fm.
