While a student at the Berklee School of Music in the early 1980s, pianist Makoto Ozone met jazz vibraphonist Gary Burton's, and subsequently joined his band. Ozone played with Burton for a few years, and then went on to a successful solo career, continuing to record with Burton's band from time to time.
The pair has recorded some duets together: the album Face to Face in 1995, which contained severa Ozone originals, as well as songs ranging from Thelonious Monk to Astor Piazolla. In 2002, the pair reunited to record Virtuosi, which contains ten classical duos with jazz improvisation.
