Archie James Cavanaugh was born in Wrangell and raised in Kake, Alaska, a predominately Tlingit community located on Kupreanoff Island of Southeast Alaska. This town of 600 people had a forty-piece Salvation Army orchestra, a jazz band composed of older experienced horn players called the "Old Timers", and two rock & roll bands: the "Bumble Bee's," this band eventually regrouped under the name of the "Merry Men," and: the "Outer Limit Four."
