Daniel Boeckner already has an impressive résumé in indie rock as a member of Wolf Parade, Divine Fits, and Handsome Furs. His next venture was to launch a solo career under the name Boeckner. Building on the glam/prog experimentation of his work in Wolf Parade, Boeckner's solo efforts fused the moody tone of '80s alternative music with a sure sense of intelligent pop melodicism His solo debut, 2024's Boeckner!, was a polished and passionate amalgam of guitars, vintage electronics, and vocals, all defined by a cool urgency.

Daniel Boeckner was born on February 5, 1978, in Lake Cowichan, British Columbia, Canada. He joined his first band, Say Uncle, when he was still in high school, and soon after he graduated, he relocated to Victoria, British Columbia, in hopes of making music his career. One of his first projects after settling in Victoria was a group called God Shaped Vacuum; it also featured Carey Mercer, who would go on to lead Frog Eyes. God Shaped Vacuum broke up not long after releasing an album, and in 2000 Boeckner joined forces with John Pollard to start Atlas Strategic, cutting the album Rapture, Ye Minions! for a local indie imprint, Global Symphonic. Atlas Strategic split after issuing a follow-up EP in 2002, and Boeckner moved to Montreal, Quebec in search of new opportunities.

In 2003, Boeckner met Spencer Krug, who had been a member of Frog Eyes with his God Shaped Vacuum bandmate Carey Mercer. Krug had an opportunity to open a show for Arcade Fire and he was trying to put together a band; Boeckner signed on for the new group, which would become Wolf Parade. The group landed a deal with Sub Pop Records, and their debut album, 2005's Apologies to the Queen Mary, fared well with critics and fans. They would issue two more LPs (2008's At Mount Zoomer and 2010's Expo 86) before going on hiatus in 2011. During this period, Boeckner also had a side project, Handsome Furs, a collaboration with author and musician Alexei Perry. Handsome Furs' first album, Plague Park, was released by Sub Pop in 2007, followed in 2009 by Face Control and in 2011 by Sound Kapital (the latter featuring a controversial cover with a full-frontal nude portrait of a woman). Boeckner and Perry were engaged to be married, and when their relationship soured, the group broke up in 2012.

As Handsome Furs were fading out, Boeckner and Britt Daniel of Spoon started a new band called Divine Fits. They recorded an album with producer Nick Launay, A Thing Called Divine Fits, that arrived in August 2012, and a round of touring produced a live disc, 2014's Live at Third Man Records, before they moved on to other projects. Boeckner next brought Sam Brown (who had worked with Handsome Furs) and Devojka aboard for his next ensemble, Operators, whose music was steeped in vintage synth pop. In 2016, they unveiled their first album, Blue Wave, but the release was somewhat overshadowed when Wolf Parade went public with their decision to reunite; they released a self-titled EP a month after Blue Wave arrived, and a full-length album, Cry Cry Cry, was released by Sub Pop in October 2017. The re-formation of Wolf Parade didn't spell the end of Operators, and their second full-length, Radiant Dawn, appeared in 2019. January 2020 saw a new Wolf Parade album, Thin Mind, and Boeckner became a studio ally for the Toronto group Kiwi Jr., producing and adding an instrumental assist on their first three albums (2019's Football Money, 2021's Cooler Returns, and 2022's Chopper). In his spare time, he also hosted a podcast, The Bottlemen, focusing on left-wing politics in Canada. In March 2024, Boeckner introduced himself as a solo artist with his first album on his own, Boeckner!, released by Sub Pop.
