Richard 'Dicky James' Wagster was born in 1956 in Gary, Indiana and raised in Calumet City, Illinois. As a boy Dicky watched his older brother, Bear, play guitar and immediately fell in love. At age 12 he got his first guitar, a Stella acoustic, and began learning by ear from whatever blues and Motown records he could pick up.
He was finally on his way when his brother brought him his first electric guitar from the px in Vietnam. Around age 18 he began performing in clubs from coast to coast and opening for numerous major recording artists. In 1994 he relocated to the Wabash Valley where, in 2008, he and the rest of the boys formed Dicky James and the Blue Flames.
The band is made up five accomplished players who collectively have nearly 200 years experience. Despite the fact that they're not kids this band ROCKS!
Dicky James is the lead guitar player, vocalist and main writer. He has played guitar since his brother brought him one back from Viet Nam in 1970. Dick has played in several touring blues and rock bands and has opened for such acts as Nazareth, Cheap Trick, Survivor, and Koko Taylor.
Dick is a prolific song writer and he finds his inspiration in everyday life. The song 'Chicago Skyway' is written about his father's tragic death in an auto accident on that very highway. 'Truman Street Blues' is about growing up in Gary, Indiana. He even wrote one, the funky 'Game On', about a neighbor's love affair. (That's all we'll say about that one). Dick is also a Smith Custom Amp endorser.
Bob Freeze blows a mean harmonica through his Harp King amp. He has played most of his but took a few years off until asked to lend his talents to a Nashville recording project in 1992. Since that time it's been full steam ahead.
As owner of the Music Shoppe in Terre Haute, one of the nations premier guitar stores, keyboard player (ironically enough)John Beeson has rubbed shoulders with some of the biggest names in modern music. John started out on guitar but switched to the Hammond organ several years ago and adds some sweet vocal harmonies to the Blue Flames.
Mark Ford is the band's bass player, main arranger and musical guru. Mark is a jazz guy and has played in big bands as well as a few rock groups. He plays upright and fretless and adds some serious swing to the band.
And finally there's drummer Will Cox. What do you say about drummers? They are a strange lot. Will began playing soon after watching the Ed Sullivan Show one Sunday night in 1964. He has played in a succession of rock and roll bands but, after a misguided stint as a banker, remains a bluesman to the bone.
