More of a street click than just a music group, Beat Gang was started in Cincinnati, OH, by two producers and a CEO who inducted B. Luck and E-Check , later adding Tweez. After one of the producers passed away, Beat Gang’s owner was incarcerated and the remaining producer quit the group, B. Luck was left to take over. B. Luck accepted the challenge and continued promoting their work.
“Whistle” brought Beat Gang into the limelight, on a city-wide level in 2007, earning them local shows and notoriety. Even though the song wasn’t pushed nationally, it created anticipation for more music. B. Luck explains their first single’s success. “It ended up getting on radio. That’s when people classified us as a group.”The trio kept recording, eventually releasing the popular mixtape Deal Or No Deal hosted by DJ
Drizzle.
Later, Beat Gang wrote a song to accompany a dance already made popular boxers, 2-time Olympian Rau’shee Warren and Golden Boy Promotion’s professional Adrien “Da Problem” Broner. They named the dance “Mr. Miyagi”. “We have a whole bunch of boxers that’s on the team,” Luck describes the events leading to the song’s buzz. “Every time they would have a fight, we would bring them out to the song, and that’s how it broke.” People flocked to YouTube to see the dance everyone was doing. DJs soon went in on the record, and before long, it was playing in every club city-wide. Beat Gang had struck again.
Deciding they needed a mixtape to promote the single, in 2009 Beat Gang released One Day One Take, a CD recorded entirely in one day. Composed mostly of freestyles with no original production, the project served as an appetizer for their more formal mixtape Who Dey?. Who Dey? is Beat Gang’s first nationally released compilation, and showcases their wide range of styles. It’s these types of efforts that earned them the title Best New Group at the 2009 Ohio Hip Hop Awards in Cleveland. Conquering their
state was a major step towards their ultimate goal – breaking into the mainstream. “I wanna be on that 106 & Park couch,” Tweez declares. “We need to go major.”
With songs ranging from up-tempo party records to more insightful street songs, the group makes sure to keep variety in their catalog of music. “Most of the people that come out with dance songs don’t stay around,” Luck says. “But we really can rap – when we get our chance, we’re staying.”
