On [i[Eba Say Aja, two great salsa soneros—the Panamanian Ruben Blades and the Puerto Rican Cheo Feliciano—cover each other’s songs and team up to sing two duets. Blades rose to fame as the vocalist for Willie Colon’s band in the '70s before launching his successful solo career. Feliciano’s been performing since the '50s, and his 1972 solo debut, Cheo, was a smash hit. Here, Blades' interpretation of “Nina” kicks things off; he's in top form as he's backed by a fine band. (Vibraphone plays a key role, as it did in Blades’ '80s outfit Seis del Solar.) It’s interesting to hear Feliciano intone “Juana Mayo,” a song with an unmistakable Blades vibe. The singers share vocals on “Lo Bueno Ya Viene” and “Si Te Dicen.” On the first track, the pair engages in an exciting back-and-forth; Feliciano is soulful and earthy while Blades soars. “Si Te Dicen” finds Feliciano’s ultra-romantic lead nicely contrasting with the passages where the two sing together.
