Martin, Christian and Ingo started to play instrumentals based on guitar, bass and drums in 1999 in Oldenburg, Germany, where they studied. They called themselves "The Golden Boys" looking for golden tones. Important characteristics of their musical approach were minimalism, reduction to essentials in melody and structure and a free flow for tones. The music sounded warm and mellow with a certain melancholy.

Two years later, two friends Julia and Susanne recorded a birthday song for drummer Christian. From that on the two young women joined the band and they called themselves UWIK (Unsere Welt In Klein is German for Our World In Small). Julia´s and Susanne´s vocals were more and more integrated in the sound, functioning as additional instruments. The first results of this work are documented on UWIK´s self-released EP Mimikry (2001), which contains instrumentals, as well as some new songs with vocals. One song on Mimikry is called Ask Stereolab, which is a little hint to one of their main influences. The song contains beautiful harmony vocals by Julia and Susanne.

In 2003 UWIK released a split single together with MIKROFISCH on Schinderwies. On Far´Fisima a Farfisa organ, electronics and programmed beats were added. The next two years UWIK kept writing new songs to complete their first full length album. "Finding" was released by Schinderwies in May 2005. The 12 compositions combine Instrumental Rock, often to deconstruct classical song structures, singer Julia´s and Susan´s delicate voices, Wave keyboards and interwoven guitar patterns.
