The "Conjunto Académico João Paulo" was arguably the most famous of the academic musical groups that sprouted in the Portuguese music scene of the early 60s. Hailed as a major influence in the early rock-pop artists of Portugal, they were made famous by originals such as "O Louco", "Hully Gully do Montanhês" or "Kilimandjaro" and countless covers of international hits.

Formed in the island of Madeira by students of the Jaime Moniz high-school, the band was composed by João Paulo (keyboards), Rui Brazão, (guitar), Ângelo Moura (bass), José Gualberto (drums), Carlos Alberto (guitar, composer and lyricist). The group later will later include Sérgio Borges (singer and lyricist), whose growing solo career will lead to changing its name to Sérgio Borges e O Conjunto João Paulo.

Having recorded several LPs and EPs, absorbed their sister academic group the Quinteto Académico and toured throughout the overseas territories of Portugal - both as a music act as well as when some members are called to the military in the colonial wars - the group comes to an end in the late 70s.
