In 1998 five scottish men found themselves living in south west London. United by a taste for the darker, slightly broken end of pop; rank amateurism and continental lager, they formed Sargasso.

The band's distinctive sound was defined as much by each of the band members trying to make themselves heard above the towering output of Paul Lyall's larynx and George Robertson's capacious and fiercely struck kick drum, as their determined (some would say wilful) efforts to channel their diffuse influences into a coherent sound. Thus knowing and mannered recordings took on a more reckless, sinister edge in the live arena.

The band split in 2000, though it is rumoured that songwriting bassist Robin Graham is still working on a coda to Leisureland, with various members going on to further their underachivement in Beachbuggy and We Will Be Pilots. Sargasso are remembered fondly by audiences that caught live shows in London and the near-legendary two-date world tour of eastern Scotland.
