Gyro were a short-lived post punk band from Manchester, United Kingdom, active in the latter half of the 1970s. They released just one single, 1978's 'Central Detention Centre'.

Gyro formed in 1975 around former Toggery Five singer Paul Young (not the 1980s solo superstar...) and two guitarists, Chris Gill and Ian Wilson. Frustrated by the band's inability to land a recording contract, Young left to join Sad Café, taking Wilson with him.

Moss Side resident Gill then became the frontman, as he put together a new Gyro line-up that also featured Adam Rogers (guitar), Phillip Scott (bass) and Ian Drummond (drums). In May 1978 they released 'Central Detention Centre', their début single, produced by Martin Zero (a.k.a. Martin Hannett). The single was re-pressed in October in with a picture sleeve that misspelt the song's title.

Gyro broke up shortly afterwards, with Gill forming Cairo and also becoming a temporary member of The Mothmen. Read more on Last.fm. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
