Jema is a three-piece hardcore band from Silver Spring, Maryland. The band started off as a side project consisting of three members from the rock/alternative band, Undergone. The three members began this band because they were getting into heavier music at the time and wanted to be in a band that played heavier music. The name 'Jema' was an acronym of the band members at the time. "J" for Johnny, "E" for Ernie, "M" for Matt, and "A" for Andrew. But the vocalist, Andrew, unfortunately passed away of diabetes shortly after joining. After the band wrote some of their first songs and played their first show, the guitarist quit the band due to loss of interest. Consequently, the band name was not an acronym anymore. Along with the "A," the "M" also was gone. So from then on, the band name was just a band name with a little tale behind it, not an acronym. The band then became "dead" for about a year, but still had hope. Pretty soon, Ernie and Johnny decided to write a song for Ernie to perform at a local talent show. That song is now known as "Long Walks on a Beach". The two of them liked it, and decided to make it the band's song. About a year later, Johnny found a guy he knew played guitar, Nathan, the current guitarist.
