Charlie Rich was born in Colt, Arkansas on 14th December 1934. Seeking work at Sun Records in Memphis, he was advised by Sam Phillips that his piano playing was too jazzy and sent home with a stack of Jerry Lee Lewis records. He subsequently played sessions at Sun for Warren Smith, Ray Smith and Billy Lee Riley. In 1959 he had his own rockabilly hit with Lonely Weekends, followed by Big Boss Man and, on Smash records, Mohair Sam. Rich finally came into his own following a move to Epic records and, under the guidance of Country producer Billy Sherrill created the classic tracks Behind Closed Doors and Most Beautiful Girl in the World in the early 1970s. His fusion of blues, jazz, rockabilly and country made him a unique artist with a string of hits, that crossed over from Country to pop, throughout the 1970s and 80s. He died on 25th July 1995 in a motel in Hammond, Louisiana aged just 62 from a blood clot on the lung.
Janie Fricke was born in South Whitley, Indiana on19th December 1947. Her early influences were the folk music of Judy Collins and Joan Baez but in 1975 she moved to Nashville where she became an in-demand jingle singer and backing vocalist for artists like Crystal Gayle, Conway Twitty, Ronnie Milsap, Tanya Tucker and, ultimately, Johnny Duncan. Initially uncredited on Duncan's records, she eventualy gained equal billing on the single Come A Little Bit Closer. In the early 1980s she scored six number one solo Country hits, also under the guidance of Billy Sherrill, including Don't Worry Bout Me Baby, It Ain't Easy Being Easy, He's A Heartache.
