‘What Would Judas Do?’ is the debut single from Ocean Bottom Nightmare. Mixed by legendary producer Chris Sheldon (Biffy Clyro, Foo Fighters, Reuben), it is set for a digital release on 10th May 2010.
Ocean Bottom Nightmare formed in Nottingham at the beginning of 2007 out of a mutual desire to make quirky rock music. They cut their teeth playing a plethora of gigs around the UK with the likes of Future Of The Left, Baddies, The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster, Pulled Apart By Horses, Gay For Johnny Depp, Tubelord and Blakfish, and quickly became renowned for extremely energetic, frantic and engaging performances.
Aside from an exciting spectacle on stage, the music itself was able to garner a rare cross-genre appeal by combining the passion and raw emotion of punk and metal with a pop sensibility and a strong sense of melody and harmony. It was immediate and in your face, yet layered enough to reward repeated listening.
“They'd be perfect on the Vans Warped Tour. And the Kerrang Tour in the UK: they'd be amazing on that.” - Mark Richardson (Skunk Anansie/Feeder)
In 2009 they released their debut EP, ‘We Are Serious’: four tracks of distorted bass, three-part harmonies and manic screaming, with a touch of glockenspiel for good measure. Four concise tactical bursts of explosive alternative rock. The EP was met with critical praise:
“Faultless… Possibly what an apocalypse should sound like.” - Sandman Magazine
“This local three-piece fail to disappoint and constantly deliver a frantic flurry which will certainly bring the trio a colossal fan base. Rating: 5/5.” - Nottingham Evening Post
“Massively distorted bass, the occasional scream, Bad Religion-esque group harmonies, repeating mantras and even the occasional Donnas style high melodies make for a unique mix… a promising EP.” - Punktastic
“Judging from their savage burst of an EP, you can expect nothing less than a frantic storm of crashing guitars at ear-splitting volume.” - LeftLion Magazine
Spurred on by their successes, the band set to writing new material, taking what they had learned so far and honing their sound. Inspired by bands such as Oceansize and SikTh, they reached new levels of intricacy and attention to detail, but never letting this detract from their fundamental love of big, hooky riffs. OBN’s first full single, ‘What Would Judas Do?’, represents a significant step forward for the band, and a mere taster of the great things to come. Read more on Last.fm.
