Atlas Maior is a music project based in Austin, Texas that reaches across traditions for a translation that maps diverse geographic coordinates, placing Eastern Arab, North Indian, West and North African, East Asian, as well as Central, North and South American musical idioms in dialogue with one another.

The Atlas Maior was a world atlas published in 11 volumes in Latin in Amsterdam in the 17th century. At a time when nations were awaking to their own separate identities on a planet newly connected by the movement of goods, immigrants and slaves moved across borders through colonialism and trade.

Today, music reveals our common interdependence and the possibility for harmony as disparate cultures move across borders again. You can’t sense culture from a map – just shapes, lines, symbols and words, textures and colors. Music, however, uses all of these tools, in sound, to begin to reveal the real territory of human emotion and design, hidden within the map.

Our trio makes indigenous American music given birth through Jazz, Indian classical & folk, Classical Arabic, Southeastern European, Flamenco, Native American, North & West African musical traditions.
