Informal Friend is the creative alias of Matt Beatty. The style of Informal Friend can be described as messy, experimental, DIY Indie Rock, including lots of guitar, piano, and various synths. Hes mentioned that much of his music was inspired by Lemon Demon, and hes compared his music to Will Wood in the past.

He released his first single "GUTS" in March of 2022, and continued to release occasional singles throughout the early portions of his career. He released 4 singles and a brief EP before finally debuting his first full album "WHEN does it end?" in September 2023. Since this, hes been continuing to release singles, and a previously scrapped album entitled "The GUTS Collection" and is planning on releasing a new album some time in 2025.

On his Youtube channel he has an ongoing series called "The Archives." This series follows the character of Informal Friend, who has found himself stuck inside of a room with no memory of who he is or how he got there, and hes forced to make music. This series loosely follows the music he has released, and is planning to release, and serves to provide lore to many of the songs. Read more on Last.fm.
