Rappers Rapp Group, which later reformed as Dark Star, was a Los Angeles based old school west coast rap group comprised of six LA area rap artists: D.J. Flash, King M.C., Disco Carl (aka Lovin' C), Mr. Ice, M.C. Fosty, and Mackermoe. Their name bears a close resemblance to Duffy Hooks III's Rappers Rapp Disco Co., which was the label that produced them, but the two should not be confused. Rappers Rapp Group was one of the first major three LA hip hop acts, the other two being Disco Daddy & Captain Rapp, and Uncle Jamm's Army.

The history behind why the group reformed as Dark Star was that in late 1982 Duffy Hooks III provided the group with a chance to release an EP for Ray Harris under AVI Records which was distributed by MCA. According to D.J. Flash, the release was "so new & the time ... MCA didn't know how to market it." That's why it was only released abroad. Unfortunately, this was common for rap at the time, which would sometimes be released as funk, disco, or R&B, depending on the region. Dark Star did, however, receive a lot of Los Angeles airplay on KGFJ, and as a result of the exposure was able to perform for all L.A. area High Schools in 1983 for the "Stay In School Tour."
