Little Band of Sailors was born in New York in the winter of 2011 of the collaboration between artist Rachel Mason and engineer Dmitriy Ivolgin.

Rachel Mason, who fronts Little Band of Sailors, has been a musician and a performer for most of her life, and has a significant amount of notoriety as an artist. "In the spirit of all tortured heroines her sound pulls P.J. Harvey out of quicksand by the hair while recounting a rich tradition of witchcraft. Raised in the USSR, Ivolgin style and melodic lines have been influenced by the Soviet era rock bands. After a few months of writing songs and creating short performances, Little Band of Sailors' shows have expanded into larger works of theater which have been called "epic" and "monumental." And after playing for a few months as a duo in New York, Mason and Ivolgin were joined by Vanessa Alvarez, a drummer for punk bands in Brooklyn and a Classically trained Bass-Clarinet player, Mara Meyer, who walked onto the stage at one of their shows and has been in the band ever since.
