Born in Nairobi, Kenya, and raised in Knysna, South Africa, Kyle's journey from a young, aspiring pianist to a multifaceted music artist is a testament to his dedication and passion for music.

From an early age, Kyle displayed a natural curiosity toward sound and music. Born into a family that cherished the arts, he was introduced to the world of music through his dad's extensive record collection. During afternoon trips to his grandmother’s house, Kyle would play around on a vintage family piano, and it wasn’t long before he started to replicate the melodies that were being played around him. Throughout primary school, Kyle took piano lessons and performed improvisational classical and jazz pieces. During his junior year at Oakhill High School, Kyle was introduced to a local jazz icon, Waldemar van Wyk. Waldi mentored Kyle throughout his schooling career and helped him build a strong musical foundation. It was during this time that Kyle began recording, writing, and producing music.

After graduating from high school, Kyle Underwood moved to Cape Town to pursue his passion for sound and music academically, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Sound Engineering from Cape Audio College. During this period, Kyle honed his unique sound, performed as a guerrilla solo jazz pianist, and diversified into producing for a range of musical genres, from Hip-Hop to Electronica.

Kyle Underwood’s (1LOVE) music is characterized by its attention to detail, evocative storytelling, and creation of unique worlds. Inspired by artists as diverse as Charles Mingus and Radiohead, 1LOVE combines his interests in sonic landscapes, textures, and abstract instrumentation to formulate a sound that can be described as otherworldly, grand, and stereophonically psychedelic. His debut album, "The Grand Pendulum," released in September 2023, marked a significant milestone in his career.
