Matthew Golding, was the last of five children born to Joseph and Beverley Golding in Kingston, Jamaica. His father was a soldier so he grew up on an army base. At the age of thirteen his father retired and his family moved to Portmore, St. Catherine. As a child, Matthew was drawn to music with an innate desire to perform and entertain.
"My mother was a drama teacher and she wrote a lot of plays and still writes to this day," says Matthew, "Maybe that's why I am so dramatic. She is an on fire Christian and that's where I get my Christian roots. My Father was a soldier and that's why I am so militant."
Matthew's greatest inspiration growing up was his older brother Mark (aka RAMROD), who was into deejaying and rapping. Following Mark's footsteps, in 1992, Matthew attended St. Georges College where he wrote his first rap lyrics while in the eighth grade. As his lyrical skills continued to develop, he took up the name "Suicide", for he was notorious for his crazy ways.
From 1996 to 2001, Matthew was part of a group called the Marawdaz. During that time he flipped his style from hip-hop to dancehall. As he was enjoying the growth of his secular career, all the attributes that typically accompany this type of lifestyle were prevalent; girls and a crazy party life. Yet with all that, there was one area of his life that he had not conquered; the unexplainable bleakness and profound emptiness within his soul that he couldn't drink, smoke or manage to chase away.
On September 11th 2001, when the world was waking up to the tragedy of the twin towers in New York succumbing to an outright terrorist attack, another attack of sorts was going on within Matthew. Seeing the grief and finally getting the courage to put a name to the confusion in his soul, Matthew decided not only to surrender his life to Jesus Christ but in doing so, resigned from Marawdaz and dropped his popular alias "Suicide". Although this was a wonderful event, transition wasn't easy as he was now a one-man show without a name. Matthew felt he had to go back to basics, before all the girls, cars, money, jewelry, drugs, and alcohol. He started reflecting on his life and new that he had to make a change.
Armed with this knowledge, Matthew became born again and adopted the moniker of St. Matthew aka "the Gospel Defender." Armed with the catch phrase "readyback", (which means be ready, equipped and prepared), Matthew was ready to take on the World!
Described as "The most engaging voice in gospel dancehall," (Mark Mohr, GospelReggae.com), St. Matthew has now become a force to be reckoned with in Gospel Dancehall arena. In addition to the release of his first three mixtapes and Kingdom Vibrations (with DJ Counsellor and Mr. Lynx), Matthew has been featured on over a dozen top selling gospel reggae albums/compilations.
In addition to his numerous performances on both the gospel and secular circuits, Matthew continues to maintain his rigorous writing and recording schedule. In July of 2006 he was thrown for a loop with the passing of his father in a tragic car accident. Coming out of that St. Matthew has even more resolve than ever before. He refuses to let anything hinder him from his calling. Despite personal and professional obstacles, he is determined to push forward as a Christian Soldier and gospel defender.

GR: Tell us about yourself, where were you born and grow up, what your family is like.
St. Matthew: I was born in Kingston, Jamaica. I was a middle class youth so I was able to see both sides of life. I lived on an army base so that made a difference with understanding survival and what it is to be on both scale of life. I had four other brothers. We were close but very different. We were like any ordinary family with peculiar personalities. As for me, well I was always up to something and stood out among my peers for one reason or another.
GR: How did you begin doing music?
St. Matthew: I grew up around music with the radio on all the time. I also saw my brother doing shows. My whole family seemed to gravitate towards music. My mother did drama and teaching at the institute of Jamaica. She loved her church and was always singing some church hymn. My father was a soldier but he loved music and singing to himself. As for my four other brothers 1 of them (Mark) used to like dancing and doing his thing on the mic. My Eldest brother (Jerome) used to be involved with a sound system at the time called Rolls Royce. In the 8th grade I first picked up a pen and paper and wrote my first rap lyric. Since then I have ran out of ink many times.
GR: Tell me, how did your name come about? Any obstacles with it--funny mispronunciations, etc...?
St. Matthew: I was in a group before I accepted the Lord known as the MARAWDAZ and it was two of us mainly holding it down musically. At that time I was known as SUICIDE just for my crazy lyrics. I was always wilding out lyrically. But since I was born Matthew, just like the doctor gets his doctorate, after coming to the Lord I was now a saint, hence Saint Matthew.
GR: What is the most valuable lesson that you learned from your Mom or Dad growing up that you still apply today?
St. Matthew: Loyalty--sticking with each other through thick and thin.
GR: What has been the greatest mistake that you have made in ministry and learned from? How have you used this experience to change the way you approach ministry?
St. Matthew: I have made mistakes but can't think of which is my greatest at the moment. I have been through and seen a lot and I have learned many things from all of them.
GR: If you could share the stage with any Christian or secular artist in the world (living or dead) who would it be?
St. Matthew: Mr. Lynx, Emrand Henry, Troy Anthony, Monty G and many others.
GR: I know that you have written a whole heap of songs in the past, but what's your favorite one? Now, if that is too hard for you to answer, then tell me this; if you spent 5 minutes with an avid reggae fan and only had enough time to play them one of your songs, which one would you play them?

GR. What is the wickedest riddim that you never rode upon?
St. Matthew: well I don't have one off the top of my head 'cause every riddim have a different vibe and energy. However, in recent time (2007) I did a song called "IF U ONLY KNOW". I guess that was a riddim weh mi like cause that's fresh in my head and peeps seem to think it's fiery
GR: Read any good books lately?
St. Matthew: Yes, one of them was "Daily Bread" and the other is called "Prayer is a Great Medicine" or something like that.
GR: What's your favorite verse in the Bible and why?
St. Matthew: There are so many that I can't think of one specific favorite, but I do like where it says, "The Lord doesn't see as man sees cause while the man sees our outer man, the Lord looks at the inner man."
GR: What Bible characters do you most identify yourself with?
St. Matthew: I would say Solomon and Paul.
GR: What do you have to say about (or to) artists that started off in the Christian industry (CBA) doing gospel music and now sing secular (mainstream) with a watered down, or ambiguous message?
St. Matthew: READYBACK... Come back and bring forth the undiluted gospel!
GR: As Christians, God is of course our true inspiration, but beyond the generic response of "Jesus," what are your muses in your life (for lack of a better word)? For example, what are the people, places, or things that trigger a fresh musical idea and ultimately a new song for you?
St. Matthew: REALITY!
GR: Name something personal that gives you great satisfaction.
St. Matthew: FAMILY
GR: What do you enjoy most about touring?
St. Matthew: Meeting new brothers and sisters who share the same views and understanding.
GR: What country would you tour (even if you didn't get paid to perform)?
St. Matthew: AMERICA... The one reason I can think about is that whatever America does others follow and they are the leaders in World power. America impacts the earth more than any other country and if that can get touched by JESUS, WE WOULD SEE A WHOLE DIFFERENT WORLD.
GR: What goes through your mind before you go onstage at the average show?
St. Matthew: What message would be best to bring this audience?
GR: Do you prefer being in the studio or on the road??
St. Matthew: They go hand in hand. I prefer studio for the fact that if the gospel is not recorded it won't be there to spread. I like the road because I'm able to interact with peeps and feel their pain even more.
GR: If you could whisper in the ears of youths aspiring to start a music ministry like yours, what would you say?
St. Matthew: Focus on the Lord and all shall fall into place.
GR: Could you please give a message to the reggae fans that are reading this and would like to know more about your faith and who Jesus is to you?
St. Matthew: HE IS MORE THAN A FRIEND HE IS A COMFORTER AND I LEARNED THAT MORE SO WHEN MY FATHER PERISHED INNA CAR ACCIDENT. GOD GAVE ME A STRENGTH THAT I NEVER BELIEVED I HAD TO HANDLE IT--BUT I DID... THROUGH HIM... JESUS CHRIST!
