We contain multitudes.” With their playful mélange of post-rock, geek rock, soul, British Invasion-era pop and psychedelia, The Ums are veritable virtuosos of self-contradiction, spinning out sugary coated pop-confections, which seem to hint at hidden emotional depths in their lighter moments even while delivering some unlikely punchline in their more earnest moments. Another way to look at it is this: The Ums are like the illegitimate musical progeny of The Beatles and They Might Be Giants—sort of like John Lennon meets John Linnell.
