Don Cherry (November 18, 1936 – October 19, 1995) was an influential jazz trumpeter who worked with the likes of Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, and Sonny Rollins. With Coleman he formed the group Old and New Dreams which featured Dewey Redman, Charlie Haden, and Ed Blackwell.
Ed Blackwell (October 10, 1929 – October 7, 1992) was a jazz drummer/percussionist who besides playing with Ornette Coleman had stints with a variety of other musicians including Ray Charles.
As mentioned above, both Cherry and Blackwell played alongside Coleman in the group Old and New Dreams. This particular recording of the duet is from January 1978 in Philedelphia and features Don Cherry playing a variety of instruments including the flute, the trumpet, organ, and even has him whistling.
