When Randy Craig talks about his new album Spin the first thing that comes out of his mouth is “Thank God, people finally get to hear what I have been hearing in my head! I was almost going to have to let them cut it open just for the sake of my own sanity.”
The songwriter’s emphatic response is not without merit. Playing venues around Colorado, Oregon, Montana, and Wyoming for the last couple of years, Randy has only been a solo acoustic rock act but he has always desired for people to hear his songs in a more colorful and dynamic fashion. He has done that with “Spin,” a collection of songs layered with Randy’s textured guitar playing, his unique voice, and introspective lyrics.
Recorded in Portland, OR by Randy and Jason Legler (who mixed and mastered the disc), with drums played by Ben Crisman, “Spin” is an eclectic mix of pop rock made with the raw ingredients instant coffee lovers should fear. “This is the real thing. No artificial sweetener, plus all kinds of exotic flavors.”
_____From the strat-filled drinkin song “Dragonfly” to the rockabilly punk rocker “All You Need,” Randy acknowledges his range of personality is transparent through his music. “Yeah I’m a little schizo,” he says, “It’s just a reflection of my influences. I know I’m just a derivative of all the stuff that has made me love music, which is why there is a wide representation of style on the disc. But it still is me.”
_____Citing acoustic artists Dave Matthews, Ani Difranco to English pop rock idols Radiohead and The Police as his primary influences, Randy has taken all of those music greats and tried to mold it into his own little ball of creative Play-doh, open to change and hopefully ready to build into something bigger. “Like Play-doh, I hope it smells funny too. Not bad, just funny.”
_____Randy will be playing acoustic loop shows in support of “Spin” anywhere that will have him. “There are a lot of guys out there doing the whole ‘one man band’ thing but I feel like the songs have much more character when I present them that way. Plus, sometimes, it may make your rump shake just a little.” Randy smiles and says, “Especially when I lay down a salsa groove.”
