Steve Haskin has been a professional guitarist in the Twin Cities since 1979.

He began his study of guitar at age fourteen with Michael Fowler in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Steve continued his studies with Fowler at the University of Tulsa from which he graduated in 1978. Steve moved to the Twin Cities a year later and studied guitar at the University of Minnesota with James McGuire. He later studied with Alan Johnston for three years. Alan is a student of José Thomas and currently heads the guitar department at MacPhail Center for the Arts.

Steve is also a songwriter. He began performing songs at the Coffee House Extempore in '79. In 1980 he started a steady gig at the New Riverside Cafe and played there for the next ten years performing original music for steel string guitar inspired by the Windham Hill guitarists Alex DeGrassi and Michael Hedges.

In 1990 he released Boundary Waters, a CD of original music accompanied by Jim Price on violin, Marc Anderson on percussion and Chuck Armstrong on flute. Boundary Waters was nominated Best New Age recording of the year by City Pages and has sold more than 4,000 copies. In 1996 Steve released Mississippi Goin' By, original music with Clint Hoover on harmonica and Mark Briere on mandolin. It received good reviews nationally in Blues Review and Dirty Linen and locally in Minnesota Monthly and the Skyway News.

Steve began teaching guitar in the early 1980's. He has taught at St. Peters in North St. Paul, Evans Music in White Bear Lake, The Studio Grand in St. Paul and the West Bank School of Music in Minneapolis. He is currently on the applied music staff at Minneapolis Community and Technical College where he has taught for over twenty years.
