Angular is a Coffs Harbour musical producer who began making music under that name in January 2011.

Described as sounding ‘like a South London street bulletin, broadcast on pirate radio between Skream and Burial, such is the heavy atmosphere that hangs over and defines this album’, the debut Angular record, Disconnect, was released on 6 June 2011. The track 'Basement' was made available through Last.fm and Bandcamp as a teaser track for the album. Opener ‘Departure’ was given a 4 star rating by Triple J music director Richard Kingsmill. Harking back to jungle and dark garage, and the days of Croydon’s flourishing dubstep scene before things were tainted by aggressive ‘brostep’ offshoots, Disconnect is a record of twisted club music occupying a dark, post-hallucinatory comedown space after the party has finished and the revellers have gone home – one reviewer described the record as potentially sounding ‘absolutely incredible in a dank basement at 3am after a few blunts’, also adding that ‘it is refreshing to hear a bedroom auteur that’s not afraid of space; Klingbiel allows his rhythmic repetitions to hang in the air, supported only by their own inertia’.

The deluxe CD edition of the record was released with the bonus EP Inner City Tension, a darker and more experimental piece incorporating musique concrète-inspired found sound collages to conjure images of a threatening urban dystopia. Conceptually dealing with gangland culture, hustling, rioting and homelessness, the record conjures imagery of urban society’s underbelly, as well-armed youths lurk unlit alleys with malicious intent, kingpins swagger in and out of seedy strip clubs and lowlives scuttle the streets looking to score.

The second Angular record, Unrest, was recorded in Coffs Harbour, South London and Paris between March 2011 and September 2012, and mixed in Coffs Harbour between July and October 2012. It will be released on 4 February 2013.

Drawing influence from the after-dark streetscapes of Park Beach and illegal suburban raves of West Coffs, the record’s sonic palette references Detroit techno, deep house, IDM and tripstep. Encapsulating the sense of danger and possibility gleaned from crawling grimy backstreets at sundown as house parties grow ever more violent and backyard meth production hits full swing, Unrest combines a confident, street-smart swagger with the bleakness of contemporary dystopian landscapes and the ever-simmering threat of disaffected youths looking to dismantle society’s fabric. As a body of work, it is united by the common thread of the titular characteristic, and deals with the present state of urban social decay while looking ahead to a future where the situation has the distinct potential to spiral out of control.
