Contrary to what people believe, Forget the Girl is not a rock band selling anti-woman anthems or denying the painfulness of relationships. In the words of vocalist / guitarist Mike Hong, "it's about getting up in the morning and punching life in the face, rather than avoiding it. Life is about more than just girls... ok, and that being said, we like girls a whole lot."
FtG's hook-driven melodies and unforgettable lyrics come amidst a synergy of memorable rock guitar riffs and some drums and bass to back it up.
No, to be serious, they really back it up. Forget the Girl's live presence is unmistakably passionate and real.
Refusing to be lost among the many voices clamoring and complaining about self-centered romance, FtG's songs speak about deeper issues of despair, fear, hope, and in the appropriate times, simply come along side someone to let them know they are not alone. "It's not jsut about the music," says Mike, "it's about what the music is pointing to. That's what all good art does."
The band started in the summer of 2002 when Mike, then a student at Boston College, was introduced to guitarist / vocalist Thomas and drummer Robin, who were both finishing up degrees at Berklee School of Music. Mike had written some songs, and so the trio began to practice together, with Tom switching to bass. The group played a few small venues; Bassist Dave Chen, a mutual friend, joined the band a few months later, freeing up Tom to play guitar and expand the band's sonic creativity. Dave thought up the name of the band's first release, the Donut EP, released in the fall of 2003. Read more on Last.fm.
