A Swedish shoegaze/post-rock band formed back in 1998 by cousins Calle Thoor (vocals, guitars, echoes, drums, etc) and Oskar Erlandsson (bass, keyboards, backing vocals, noises, samples, etc) in the village Svarteberga, Öland. The band is currently based in Borgholm and Gothenburg, Sweden. Their sophomore album, Isles, was released in late March 2012.
Since their incarnation, Bolywool have gone through different phases - each and every one ending up somewhere in between shoegaze, brit pop, slowcore/post-rock and the more upbeat sounds of the British Invasion. Bolywool's first recordings were made in an old and damp barn in which the acoustics were so poor that all tracks and overdubs had to be drenched in reverb and echo, which sparked a lust for experimenting with soundscapes and unorthodox lo-fi recording techniques.
Guitarist Cristian Ekman (1969 Armstrong, There, There and Valla) became a full-fledged member in 2006 after having recorded with Thoor and Erlandsson since 2004. Producer Jonas Odhner (Sonores) and drummer/remix wiz kid Simon Hildor (Hunt, There, There) joined the band in 2009. Drummer/multi-instrumentalist Ramo Spatalovic (The Greencoats, Franke, Maison Blance, Douglas Heart) played on the band's debut Through a Century released on October 14th 2009. Over the years, Bolywool have collaborated with members from Everyday Mistakes, Winter Took His Life, Cocoanut Groove, Afraid of Stairs and many more.
Since the release of Through a Century, the band released the retrospective An Ocean on Fire - A Retrospective 2002-2008 which was initially intended to be released on vinyl by label Fridlyst (Open Field) in 2008, but was dropped due to financial troubles. In 2010, prior to their mini tour of West Iceland, the band released the digital single The Dial; reflecting a new sound more heavily reliant on guitar arpeggios, intricate drumming, abstract lyrics, post-rockesque motifs and ambient soundscapes than before.
The EP Thoughts in Arpeggio was released in March 2011.
