Three Wiggins sisters (Dot, Helen, and Betty), better known as the Shaggs, grew up poor in Fremont, New Hampshire, and as teenage girls they had developed a love for pop groups like Dino, Desi & Billy or Herman's Hermits. When they expressed an interest in playing music their father Austin, music enthusiast, bought them instruments, payed for lessons and the girls stopped going to school (to speed up a transition from musical novices to pop stars). Despite their lack of musical expertise, on March 9, 1969, Austin drove the girls down to a studio in Massachusetts, determined to get them on tape "while they were still hot" and so they recorded, in one day, their debut album - Philosophy of the World. Before the album was released, the businessman (who was suposed to press album) skipped town with the Wiggins's money. Still, Austin managed to come away with a single box of albums and set about distributing the record wherever he could. The Shaggs started playing a regular, Saturday night dance in Fremont and added another sister, Rachel (on bass) to their band. The album failed to garner attention but the band continued to exist as a local live act. The Shaggs disbanded in 1975 after death of Austin Wiggins and never played together again. Obscure LP achieved recognition among collectors – the band was praised for their raw, intuitive composition style and lyrical honesty. Philosophy of the World was later reissued, and the compilation Shaggs' Own Thing was released in 1982. Read more on Last.fm.
