Kalkulus is the personal side project of the musician, Actor and independent film maker Karl Heard. Karl is more wider known as the lead vocalist in the band Transcript. The music that Karl creates as Kalkulus is not meant to be mainstream, but hopefully interesting. Karl felt that there were no new, experimental electronic artists creating the music that Karl wanted to hear. So he decided to experiment, creating sounds from scratch using old analogue equipment and recording using tape. Nothing is pre-planned, no notes are written down. The songs are created in an almost spontaneous way and recorded in a Live performance in whatever location Karl happens to find himself in. This uncertain way of music making is what makes the songs different. The out of kilt melodies are intentional, as is the final recording mix. The songs are full of subtle sounds, almost hidden beneath the main parts of the song. This is so each time you listen, you may hear something new. What is most remarkable about what, from the outside seems like a haphazard way to create music, is that it is all done in a melodic way, which comes across to the listener as a refreshing change, as you never quite know what to expect next. Kalkulus has been well received by like-minded Artists who hail Kalkulus as an Artist who is Pioneering a New Modern/Retro sound who is not afraid to let his imagination run riot. Karl will continue with Kalkulus, with collaborations with various artists, film soundtracks, and any other medium where Karl feels that you can be truly creative.
