Today Mel Briars is joined by two incredibly talented individuals. Daniel "D" W. is a longtime bass player dives into his first musical project exploring contemporary beats as a neophyte drummer. Risa L. is a multi-instrumentalist with exceptional improvisational skills and a great ear. The trio has managed to maintain a presence in the local community, best known for their fetching performances and constant instrument swaps. Only taking a recent break on the summer of 2023 to finish recording and producing the upcoming album, SERPENTS.

Creator and frontman, Davi, is a free spirited bohemian type from deep south Texas. Davi has always believed in loving freely. He was brought up with a deep appreciation for music. Often citing one of his earliest childhood memories was a watching his mother dancing to Tejano music, and expressing a desire to move people the way he watched her move. Early inspirations include Aleks Syntek, Ramon Ayala, Miranda!, Los Tigres del Norte, to name a few. Later influences would include artists such as The Postal Service, Bayside, The Drums, The Front Bottoms, and Arctic Monkeys.

Early life as a social outcast longing for connection taught Davi a profound appreciation for the few connections he would come across, perhaps to a fault. Much of his lyrical inspiration is taken directly from his own life and relationships.
Teaching himself to play cover songs on a dusty, old, keyboard at 12 years of age eventually led Davi to picking up the guitar. This was an exceedingly cheap classical guitar; the action far set too high for anything more than basic chords for the young artist's hands with no way top adjust. He pressed on learning anyways.

After becoming increasingly dissatisfied with learning only cover songs, a young Davi began writing his own music. Noticing his passion for the art his family would scrape together what little they had to aid the young musician. He would end up receiving a, much easier to handle, concert sized black fender steel string and small interface as a gift. This was a massive step forward for a young teen with no reliable way to purchase his own musical equipment. Davi honed his writing, recording, and production skills with his new gear and these early songs, now lost to time.

As Davi grew so did the home studio. A single mic + $40 behringer interface set up grew into a modest home studio with the help of a not-so-legal side hustle. This endeavor would, unfortunately, lead to trouble on the wrong side of the law. An event which would inspire the cover art for his very first published record. Our 18 year old Davi would subsequently release The TRGS EP.

The TRGS EP would allow Davi to gather his first group of musicians to start performing in his local area. Leading into the artist's 20's, after going through two guitarist, two bassists, and three drummers within two years, the TRGS project would fall apart due to creative differences. However, not before they were able to record and release their debut album, Quitters. Quitters is a record without much focus, it also lacks polish. This is to be expected from a self taught producer with limited experience. While impressive for what it is, Quitters is sub standard when compared to all the incredible independent music out now. This is a sentiment shared by the creator.

There were some, admittedly, great ideas on the album. A showcase of potential at best. For example, Amateur Bull Fighter and Shotgun, the two singles off of Quitters, managed to burrow their way into the hearts of early listeners. Davi will sometimes perform these at local open mics.

Due to the TRGS project falling apart and the mounting pressures of familial obligations Davi took time off from performing and recording music. Taking time to write new material sparingly. Of the many pieces he wrote during his time away many were discarded, or simply locked away in the vault indefinitely. One of those pieces would start with, arguably, the most infectious guitar riff the artists has written to date. This piece would become Discomfort.

The 2019 late summer release single marked the new jumping off point for the now 23-year-old. Discomfort was released under the project name Mel Briars. Still unwilling to take the stage without a backing band the young artist had finally continued to record music. Davi managed to drip feed listeners two more songs over half a year later. While the drip feed of new full-length songs has slowed to an excruciating halt bite sized clips of new material have since become available on the Mel Briars socials. The new material shows far more promise and cohesiveness than the work that came before. In an attempt to become less reliant on software (and other people) Davi meticulously studied every instrument he intended to compose. This has made the artists a much stronger composer and musician overall, although they say one never stops learning. Read more on Last.fm.
