"He was born in September in the midst of a rain, a small town right next to the tracks of the train." - Sheep Amidst The Wolves
Inaiah Lujan began his musical journey on the day of his birth, September 1st 1983. His first memory was a rhythm, the Indian drum beat of his mothers heart. From one look at his hands, his father rejoiced, "We have a musician in the Family." He quickly became fixated on the idea/concept of music, and how it played in important roll in his early development. From the Beatles and Bob Dylan records his mother played as he was an infant, to the gentle strums of his fathers classical guitar used to put him to sleep night after night. At age three he discovered a Casio Keyboard, and banged upon the keys until he produced an astonishing rendition of the factory demo song stored in the keyboards memory. Realizing his ear was his best music teacher, he began to mimic and play what ever he heard off his parents radio. From Mozart and Chopin to Jerry Lee Lewis and Queen, he took a liking to a wide variety of music. He wrote and performed his first song at age five titled "The Ganado Sonata", winning a local talent competition in his home town of Ganado Arizona, located on the Navajo Reservation.
Growing up amongst the Natives of Navajo land played in important role in Inaiah’s life. Learning and eventually being adopted into there culture and way of life, it gave him an a deeper appreciation for all life forms, and taught him that every heart has its song, and he would dedicate his life to finding his own heart song.
Time past and his interest in other instruments grew wild, talking on such new instruments as the Trumpet, Tuba, Drums, and eventually the Guitar. Having a musically inclined family, there were always instruments available for his use around the house. By the age of eleven with much encouragement from the current punk and rock revolution, he began to play the guitar. The same guitar his father used to sing him to sleep as a child. He also began to experiment with the recording processes, producing makeshift multi-track recordings, using a shoe box recorder and his parents home stereo. His fascination with sound manipulation grew throughout the years, forming his first band at age 14 with friends who he taught to keep the rhythm with drums and bass while he strummed his guitar. Many projects later, he found comfort in writing and producing original music, that reflected current emotions and situations of everyday life and living.
His family moved out of the small town life at the turn of the century, making a home in the larger town of Pueblo, Colorado. He quickly met other individuals of his same musical interests, and began the life of a full time musician fronting the furious punk driven band, "A Poor Substitute." building a reputation with the locals, as well as a loyal fan-base. This gave Inaiah his first glance at the world of the underground music scene, and the heart and soul of the musical realm. A Poor Substitute have had great success, recording and producing six full length albums, as well as numerous EP’s.
"I’ve sat here this broken before, with a smile on my face as I hit the cold floor...Cause everything will be okay. When everything’s gone, and everything’s done...Everything will be okay."
In the summer of 2002, Tragedy struck, when Inaiah was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis (a disease of the Colon) which lead to the hospitalization and major down fall of Inaiah’s physical activities. Weighing only 80 pounds and looking like the victim of a concentration camp, Inaiah did not lack faith that he would overcome this illness, and pursue what he felt strongly in his heart he was destined to do, create music. Weak but determined, Inaiah used every last bit of energy in his body, to pick up his guitar and sing. With his once strong voice that had become faint and week, he whispered songs of redemption. He found new life in his music, and with each new day grew closer to his heart’s song, and towards "The Dawn of a New Day!."
"It’s just begun, awakening for everyone to take part, a new start. And it’s ok to just believe, rely on faith, open your mind and you’re heart." - The Dawn of a New Day
Two years had come to pass, with medical ups and downs, numerous surgeries and the ever so frustrating rehabilitation process. Through all the chaos surrounding Inaiah and his family in this time of disaster, came Inaiah’s true sense of self, which lead to the full recovery and first release of his solo project, simply named Inaiah Lujan, and titled Ring Around the Rosies. In which he wrote, recorded and arranged every song, including playing every instrument. Ring Around the Rosies was, "A collection of songs written in the pouring rain, physically and emotionally...in hospital beds and bedroom floors, behind walls and closed doors. Inspired by life’s beauty and ugliness...and lack of sleep..." - Ring Around The Rosies Liner Notes.
"Simple in it’s arrangement - lucid guitar strumming, drums and bass - the songs magnetic draw lies not in intricate orchestration but in the incredible melody and the vocal delivery that drips with passion." - Jon Michael Pompia, The Pueblo Chieftain.
"I’ll walk across this country, through winds and pouring rains. Over bridges and highways, on busses and trains...surf amber waves of grains. If home is where the heart is, then mines beating on the road. In far away spots, through dark junk yard lots, where the transients welcome me home." - The American Dream.
After the local success of Ring Around the Rosies, Inaiah decided to take his act on the road. He always dreamed the life of a traveling musician, and now being fully recovered from his illness, he and some friends hopped into a van and headed east towards the rising sun. The road had much to teach, and became a second home to Inaiah. Wondering the streets of Omaha, Nebraska to the Subways of New York City, Inaiah found the connection to this world the natives once spoke of. Not knowing where he was going to stay or what he was going to eat, his music proved to be a door opener for new friendships and collaborations across the country. "The road has it’s own song, from the huge trains to the littlest birds...there is music in the air and in the ground." - Inaiah Lujan, KRZA Radio Interview. Inspired by the lifestyle of a transient, Inaiah began to write what would become his second release "On the Road." Singing song’s he had written in Omaha, Chicago and New York, while hitchhiking and ridding trains. On the road for three months in the fall of 2005, Inaiah traveled from coast to coast, bringing music and joy to one community at a time. He did it again in 2007, this time with The Haunted Windchimes -- a project which he shares with his partner, Desi.
Inaiah continues to write and perform music where ever he can. The next obvious step he feels is the mass production and distribution of his beloved "heart song" and music, via independent and artist owned record labels. He will play where ever people have an ear to lend. To the end of time he will keep his promise. His promise to create Music and to express his Heart. Read more on Last.fm.
