Stoley P.T. (Power Trio) seem to remember the 90s, and have produced an album that heavily hearkens us back to this golden age of music, when affective lyrics found themselves in front of happy head-bopping power chords. Fronted by Stoley, a Conan bit actor/punky-little-shit-singer-turned-guitarist, this band’s first full-length release, Lesson #1, is a bratty romp through the mind of the ridiculous stoner thoughts of its namesake.

The most immediate characterization of Stoley P.T., and acknowledged by the man himself, is a hybrid of Pavement and The Pixies. Stoley takes the poetically-insane aesthetic of Malkmus’ own lyricism and makes it his own (“And I could be your satellite / But I get scared when I’m mad high / So I’ll just quit if I can’t ride”), along with Pavement’s lazy drumming and guitar strumming, and combines it with Pixies-distorted guitars and the occasional “Ya-ya-ya” backing in the chorus. The result is music that is eminently listenable, calling to mind all those great house parties your buddy Chet threw when his big-shot dad was on business trips. This music is bratty as hell, and best served in a red plastic Solo cup. Read more on Last.fm.
