"The Sea Under the City" is a Coming to Terms story of a directionless romantic trying to make sense of love, work, death, and redemption in the modern world. Set in a fictional dreamscape under New York, "The Sea Under the City" is an escapist's fantasy of retiring to a dark paradise, or "Sunless Sea" to avoid the pressures of life in the 21st Century. Taking the classic coming of age story line of "man gets into a boat to find himself" and applying it to other nautical literary mores like Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Kubla Khan, Denton casts a cautionary tale that those that try to avoid their problems will always be forced to face them.
